6 Must-Have Tools For Pulling Used Car Parts

Whether you are replacing a headlight or the entire engine, a salvage yard can be the trump card in your frugal car repair toolkit. Even if you don't know how to fix your car, some mechanics will allow you to bring in used car parts and they will complete the repair. Used parts are often found at salvage yards or U-Pull parts yards. The following tools will help you and ensure you can get the part that you need out of the old car.

#1: A Ratchet and Wrench Set

Bring a full set of both types of wrenches. Although ratchets are easier to use, you may need regular wrenches to get into tight spots. An extension for your ratchet wrench is also handy for fitting into hard-to-reach spots. Bring wrenches in both standard and metric measurements, to ensure you can fight just the right fit to get the part out.

#2: Screwdrivers

Don't limit the screwdrivers to just phillips and slotted. Many cars also need a variety of hex heads to get out certain parts, especially electrical components. A full screwdriver set or a screwdriver with the full array of interchangeable heads is the best bet.

#3: Crowbar and Mallet

Many salvaged vehicles have been in accidents, which means you may need to dig your way through bumpers and car panels to get to the part you need. A quality crowbar and small mallet will allow you to twist and pound the twisted metal out of your way so you can get in to the part.

#4: Pliers

Bring a few different types. Long-nose pliers will help you reach in to any narrow areas, while standard pliers serve all sorts of useful purposes, from loosening a nut to acting as a vise. Also, bring along some pliers that double as wire cutters, so you can remove electrical components cleanly.

#5: Car Battery

If you are collecting anything electrical from the car, a car battery is a must. You can hook the car up to the battery and test the part before you pull it. This is especially necessary if you are pulling something from the starting system, the dash system, or the car stereo.

#6: Work Gloves & Protective Clothing

Heavy duty work gloves are a must. Also, make sure you are dressed for the salvage yard. Wear long sleeves and long pants, along with closed-toe shoes. Eye protection is also a good idea, especially if you have to do some minor demolition to reach the part.
